Admin History | 'Comrades' had a long and troubled pre-production period. The script was originally conceived in the late 1970s and was finished with funding from NFFC in 1980. Channel 4 agreed to create the film from the completed script in 1983. Originally, Bill Douglas was paired with producer Ismail Merchant in 1984, however the film's development was postponed in September later that year due to insurmountable differences between the director and producer. Work on the film was paused until the new producer, Simon Relph, was appointed and it was not until September 1985 that production finally began on the film. |
