Title'Comrades' Releases
DescriptionMaterial includes: features and reviews of 'Comrades' in original and photocopied forms; promotional items from the films release; exhibition and publicity material from the film's subsequent releases.
Admin History'Comrades' was first screened in October 1986 at the London Film Festival, however the film shown was not the final cut. It was at the second screening of 'Comrades' at the Berlin Film Festival in February 1987 that the final form of the film was seen. The film finally opened on August 23, 1987 at the Curzon West End where it ran for six weeks. This short run did not dampen the critics enthusiasm for the film; it garnered almost wholly positive reviews and was lauded as "visually stunning...subtle, and thoughtful (The Mail on Sunday', Aug 30 1987).
'Comrades' had a limited distribution on VHS in 1989. It was then re-released on DVD in 2009, almost 20 years after Bill Douglas' death. Since this re-release the film has gained international recognition and been featured in film seasons and festivals from France to Mexico.
