TitleWilliam Harding King photographs relating to his explorations of the Libyan Desert
DescriptionThis collection comprises a series of 508 black and white photographs, which were taken by William Joseph Harding King to illustrate two books 'A Search for the Masked Tawareks' and 'Across the Libyan Desert'. The print photographs are now contained in one box. One wooden box of 55 glass lantern slides is also included.
Admin HistoryWilliam Joseph Harding King (1869-1933), explorer, FRGS, was educated at Jesus College Cambridge, and apparently lived at Wollescote Hall, near Stourbridge, Worcestershire.

He travelled extensively in the north African deserts; in 1900 and 1908 he was in the Western Sahara and in 1909-1912 he explored the central portions of the Libyan Desert. He took part in 1913 with Oric Bates in the archaeological expedition to Marmarica. He was the author of two books - 'A Search for the Masked Tawareks' (1903) and 'Across the Libyan Desert' (1923) - and a number of articles.
