Description | This collection consists of archival materials relating to Oman. Mainly comprises research notes (including on PDO and Oman), unpublished papers, maps, newscuttings, conference materials and photographs, as well as photocopies and microfilm archival material held in other institutions. Also includes microfilms from the Shell International Petroleum Co. Ltd. (currently unidentified), materials relating to his PhD thesis on the Imamate tradition of Oman, and three modern Omani manuscripts (two of which are currently unidentified). The third manuscript is the original of a book relating to water and tribal settlement at Falaj Malki near Izki, Muscat, Oman (currently unavailable for production and undergoing offsite treatment and digitization). There is also a book collection which forms part of the University Library collections. |
Admin History | John Craven Wilkinson (1934-), geographer and historian, initially worked as an engineer for a petroleum company in the Middle East (Iraq and Arabia) before entering academia as a Middle East specialist, with a focus on Oman. He wrote his doctoral thesis on 'Arab settlement in Oman: the origins and development of the tribal pattern and its relationship to the Imamale' (1970, University of Oxford). He retired from his position as Reader at the School of Geography, University of Oxford, in 1997 and was also a Fellow of St. Hugh's College.
