TitleCorrespondence and drafts for Bidwell's proposed 'Dictionary of Arab History'
DescriptionFolder of correspondence between Bidwell, Professor G. Rex Smith (SOAS), Andrew Wheatcroft (of publisher Routledge Kegan Paul) Neal Burton (Oxford University Press) and others regarding the development of plans for his proposed 'Dictionary of Arab History'. These include initial discussions about the need for such a book, notes on draft proposals dealing with rival titles, comparative publications and the possible scope and contents of the work. There is also an exchange of letters (1973-75) between Bidwell and Martin Gilbert in which the latter asked for biographical information on a number of individuals, and which may have helped influence Bidwell in thinking a biographical dictionary was needed. OUP eventually declined to support the project, but Bidwell continued to work on the dictionary until his death, and it was published posthumously by Kegan Paul in 1998 as a 'Dictionary of Modern Arab History'.
