TitleNegatives
DescriptionSets of negatives for photographs taken by Nicholas Toyne in his role as the Northcott Theatre's photographer. The majority of the negatives are production stills, intended for display in the theatre and use by the press, but the negatives also include head shots taken for individual actors and images of the sets. Multiple packets of negatives are often present for each production and directions as to what part of the photo should be used and the type of paper to print on are occasionally written on the sleeves. The majority of the negatives are black and white but some colour negatives appear towards the late 1970's. Toyne kept track of many of the negatives in a notebook (EUL MS 383/1/Notebook)
In an oral history interview in 2018 (EUL MS 383/3) Toyne states that the camera he used for his photography work was a Kowa Six medium format camera and that in the early days of the Northcott, productions stills would be taken at a dedicated photo call, but later they were taken at dress rehearsals or during the performance run.

Content note: Some Northcott Theatre productions contained offensive historical language/ viewpoints, cultural stereotypes and imagery that may be uncomfortable for researchers to view. This includes the use of racial/ homophobic/ableist slurs, the portrayal of enslaved people, the use of blackface and 'Gollywog' dolls.
