TitleVows and profession papers of sisters, 1861-2010
DescriptionPapers recording the vows of sisters who made their profession in religion whilst living in Spetisbury, Dorset (1861-1886); Chudleigh, Devon (1886-1925); and South Brent, Devon (1925-2011). The vows are recorded in Latin or English. Several of the vows recorded in the 19th century are accompanied by examination papers for the year of probation and taking the habit, and profession. Many of the vows have been illuminated and gilded, and several of the 20th-century vows may have been decorated by Sister Mary Stanislas Simmons or Sister Mary Veronica Kempson.

Access ConditionsIncludes four items closed under the current Data Protection legislation.
ArrangementThese vows were previously arranged into folders by location (e.g. 'Vows made in Spetisbury', 'Vows made in Chudleigh' etc.) but not arranged chronologically within each folder. It was also discovered that several sisters made vows at more than one location, so vows of the same sister were found in different folders. The vows have therefore been arranged alphabetically by surname of the sister to enable discoverability and accessibility. Previous reference numbers for each vow have been noted in the item-level catalogue entries.
