DescriptionThis series comprises transcripts of documents relating to members of the community and Syon Abbey's history compiled by or on request of the community. It includes:

- Typescript transcript [3 copies] of a Register of Richard Fitzjames, Bishop of London, confirming the election of the confessor general, John Trowell;

- Manuscript transcript of a Latin document entitled 'Bulla Syon' concerning the 'ordinations of Bretheren of Syon from Fitzjames' Register' of 1508;

- Manuscript document entitled, 'Extract from a letter printed in Antwerp 1536 written by Gulielmus ?Courmus Nuncerinus to Philippus Montanus on the 23 July 1535', concerning the death of Richard Reynolds, a brother of Syon;

- Manuscript transcripts of 'Documents connected with the Monastery of Syon, Middlesex';

- One page of manuscript transcripts of two documents relating to Syon dated 1561 and 1567;

- Typescript transcript and translation of the rescript of Pope Pius IV to the Archbishop of Cambrai in 1564 (two copies);

- Typescript transcript of an apostolic letter to the community in their exile at Dendermonde in 1564, and a translation of the rescript of Lord George Canaro, Nuncio of Portugal, to the Lady Abbess in 1694 concerning the admittance of lay sisters;

- Transcript and translation of a document approving the sale and purchase of property in Mishagen [see EUL MS 389/PROP/1/2/3]. It is accompanied by a letter from the translator, Father Mark O.S.B. of St Mary's Abbey, Buckfast;

- Manuscript translation of a document of Pope Gregory XIII addressed to Brother Thomas William in 1578 [Willano] [see EUL MS 389/ECC/1/1/4 for the original document in Latin];

- One typescript copy and one manuscript copy of a document (at the National Archives, London, Dom. Eliz. vol 146. n 114) entitled, 'A petition for aid from the religious of the Order of St. Bridget, formerly of Sion in England' (original made c 1582-1594);

- Typescript transcripts of letters of Father Joseph Seth Foster [Confessor General of Syon Abbey in Lisbon, 1584-1628];

- 58-page typescript transcript of Thomas Robinson's account of Syon, originally published in 'Anatomie of the English Nunnery at Lisbon' in 1622, and the community's response to the claims made by Robinson;

- Typescript transcripts of 'The Life and Good End of Sister Marie', relating to the life and death of Sister Mary Champney (who professed in 1569);

- Transcripts of letters of Sister Elizabeth Sander [also known as Saunder or Saunders], presumably written in 1587, the year she returned to the community;

- Typescript and manuscript English translations from the Portuguese 'The Life of the Venerable Bridget de Mendanha', a biography of Bridget [Leonor] Mendanha, abbess of Syon in Lisbon, 1649-1655;

- Typescript transcript entitled 'Excerpt from the manuscripts of the Earl of Dartmouth Vol. III - London, 1898', concerning Captain James Jenefer's journal account of Lisbon in 1672, including references to 'Syon House' and the community of the 'English Nunnery';

- Manuscript and typescript transcripts of the letter of Sister Catherine 'Kitty' Witham to her mother, dated 27 January 1756, in which she describes the Great Earthquake in Lisbon, with an additional paragraph addressed to her Aunt Ashmall;

- Documents listing 'papal briefs, etc.', including summaries and transcripts of church documents;

- Notebook [20th century] containing summaries of manuscripts, and transcripts of letters from bishops and popes;

- Transcripts of 'Syon References' found in volumes of the Catholic Record Society;

- Typescript extracts from 'The History and Antiquities of Syon Monastery, the Parish of Isleworth, and the Chapelry of Hounslow' by George James Aungier;

- Typescript copy of an article, entitled 'Copied from the "Totnes Times" of May 25th. 1940', concerning the possibility of Syon Abbey taking in evacuees during the Second World War;

- Bundle of transcripts from extracts of records including: 'The History of the Admirable Life of the Venerable Mother Bridget of St Antony, published Lisbon 1701; 'A petition for aid from the religious of the order of St. Bridget, formerly of Sion in England'; 'Diarium Vazsteniense' by Eric [Erik] Benzelius; the flyleaf of Aungier's History of Syon and Isleworth; the manuscript 'Da Tranquillidade de la Vida' [see EUL MS 262/add2/2]; Chapter 24 to Chapter 63 of 'The Wanderings of Syon'.
