The majority of letters are from Mother Elizabeth to the community of Syon Abbey, but this series also includes several letters relating to Mother Elizabeth from and to other correspondents. The letters written by Mother Elizabeth were sent from different Bridgettine houses in Europe, including Casa di Santa Brigida in Rome, Birgittakloster in Altomünster, and Casa Santa Birgitta in Lugano, Switzerland.

Access StatusOpen
Access ConditionsOne letter dated 1987 is closed. Post-1975 correspondence is closed to public inspection on a 50-year rolling basis.
ArrangementThe majority of these letters were found in Box 18 and Box 64. They were clearly separated from other correspondence, and marked as being letters relating Mother Elizabeth Hesselblad. The files within this sub-series represent the bundles in which the correspondence was kept by the community. The original order has been retained within each file.

The correspondence in EUL MS 389/HOU/2/1, EUL MS 389/HOU/2/4, EUL MS 389/2/5, EUL MS 389/2/6, EUL MS 389/2/7 and EUL MS 389/2/9 was originally stored in a shoebox covered in Christmas wrapping paper. The letters from this box appear to have been rearranged into six distinct bundles prior to arrival at the University of Exeter in vague chronological order and undated items were arranged in a separate bundle.
