Description | Workbooks containing early manuscript drafts of poems, plays, short stories, lectures, articles and other works, along with rough notes and sketches. There are defined sets of workbooks for 'Man' [EUL MS 397/1/1], Duncan's autobiographies [EUL MS 397/1/2], 'Confessions of a Crook' [EUL MS 397/1/3], 'The Scarlet Virus' [EUL MS 397/1/4], 'Who Wrote Hamlet' [EUL MS 397/1/5] and 'Lenin' [EUL MS 397/1/6], while other workbooks generally contain notes and drafts from multiple projects.
The workbooks are mostly folio in size with red covers and often contain cuttings or loose page inserts. Many have their contents labelled on the front and contain notes to the typist. Some drafts are signed and dated at the end, often with a reference to where it was written. At least two different original numbering systems have been used for some workbooks, while many others remain un-numbered.
