Description | Two boxes of academic papers, presscuttings, correspondence and other material relating to a research project run by Omar Sheikhmous on the theme of 'Popular Religiosity and Social Adaptation among Refugees and Immigrants in Sweden [Flyktingmottagandet - Flyktinggars Integration och Etniska Relationer i Sverige [Refugee Reception/ Refugee Integration and Ethnic Relations in Sweden ]' at the Centre for Research on International Migration and Ethnic Relations at Stockholm University. The project studied Arabic-speaking Muslims, Chilean Catholics, Syriacs and Armenians, looking at the ways in which their religious views and practices were related to their experiences of migration, identity, exile and integration. There are numerous press-cuttings (mainly in Swedish, although some in English), essays and conference papers on Islamic fundamentalism, Muslim migrants in Europe, folk-religion, ethnic identity, Muslims in Britain and America, handwritten notes (some by Sheikhmous), administrative papers and correspondence, questionnaires (including some in both Sorani and Kurmanji Kurdish), and a 1994 letter from Sheikhmous to Professor Karen Armstrong asking her to present a paper at the concluding conference of the project, which ran from 1988 to 1995. There are also some later academic papers on migration, cultural identity, the integration of minorities and related themes, including a 36-page typescript 'Some Thoughts about Human Being and Politics' by Showan Khurshid which is based on the author's research on Iraqi Kurdistan. |
