DescriptionThe Confluence project was born out of the 'Rhynes, Rivers and and Running Brooks' project, which Common Ground launched in the mid-1990s. Confluence was a three-year project from 1998 to 2001 to enable, develop and encourage the creation of new music for the River Stour, from the river's source in Wiltshire, through Somerset and Dorset, and into the English Channel at Christchurch. The project was predominantly funded by a grant from the Arts for Everyone (A4E) scheme of the Arts Lottery. The main focus of the project was the organisation and delivery of a series of participatory music workshops, courses, concerts and events involving people living in the River Stour catchment area. The purpose was to draw people together to share local knowledge, and explore and express their emotional connection to the Stour through music. Helen Porter, the Music Animateur, was active in bringing people together to sing, write and perform, and Karen Wimhurst, the Composer-in-Residence, composed a range of original new works for the project. People at Common Ground who worked on this project include: Sue Clifford, Angela King, Karen Wimhurst, Helen Porter, Darren Giddings (Development Officer), and Kate O'Farrell (Administrator).

ArrangementThe files in this section of the archive were originally kept together by Common Ground; however, they have been rearranged into series to reflect the different activities within the project and to provide contextual information for users. The original order within each file has been preserved. Duplicates have been removed and disposed of wherever possible within these files, but three examples of each document have been retained.

10 files of papers relating to the Rivers project (with no mention of Confluence within them) have been removed from this section and catalogued with the Rhynes, Rivers and Running Brooks project papers (EUL MS 416/PRO/12). They can still be identified by their alternative reference number, beginning EUL MS 416/PRO/13.
