Title | Papers relating to geology and sculptures based on Local Distinctiveness |
Description | This series comprises material relating to several Local Distinctiveness projects relating to geological variation and the creation of sculptural works from rock, including 'Geology and Local Distinctiveness', 'Revealing the Geology', 'People's Geology Map', and projects with the sculptor Peter Randall-Page and photographer Chris Chapman.
The 'People's Geology Map' project aimed to create a map of our cultural relationship with everyday geology, by collecting names, facts, histories, legends, poems and pictures, which localise stone and persist in memory. The 'Geology and Local Distinctiveness' and 'Revealing the Geology' projects aimed to make more people aware of the rich geological diversity of England by encouraging imaginative projects at a local level, finding examples of good practice, and demanding better practice from local authorities and developers. In 1990, Common Ground received the Prudential Award for Visual Arts and used the money to commission the sculptor Peter Randall-Page to create sculptural works based on Local Distinctiveness in and around Drewsteignton in North Devon. At the same time, the charity commissioned the photographer Chris Chapman to photograph the evolution of Randall-Page's sculptures.
Material in this series includes research material relating to geological diversity; correspondence relating to geology, including with geologist Dr Eric Robinson; project proposals and project planning papers; and papers relating to Common Ground's collaboration with Peter Randall-Page and Chris Chapman, including the book 'Granite Song' which was based on one of Randall-Page's works. |
