TitleVolume 4 of Diary of George Henry Parlby White, 1834-41
DescriptionNotebook diary of George White R.N., covering his voyages and explorations around the Mediterranean in 1834 (duplicating the content of EUL MS 418/3) and 1841. Inside the front cover is written 'No.5' although this is the fourth in the set of six diaries held in our collection, and 'Captain White R.N.' The content of the diary runs from the first to last page, written on the right hand side pages only, and duplicates the entries from 28 February 1834 to August 1834 in EUL MS 418/3, although there are variations in the wording, with nineteen pages of additional text that are not in the previous one. These cover a visit to 'the old Moorish town of Loxa', a night-time encounter with armed 'contrabandistas' and a tour around the Alhambra in Granada. A new sequence of diary entries, starting on 7 September 1841, begins from the back of the volume written in the opposite direction. This includes White's account of an excursion to Zowan (modern Zaghouan) in Tunisia, and a vivid account of a boar hunt with dogs in which White narrowly escaped injury.
