DescriptionThis series comprises material created or collected by Emilie Harmsworth. It includes several files of correspondence, as well as papers relating to her training and qualification as a nurse during the First World War.

Following her death in 1942, Cecil Harmsworth sorted through and disposed of many of Emilie Harmsworth's personal papers. Details of this can be found in Cecil Harmsworth's diary for 1945. Further items relating to Emilie can be found within the family papers (see EUL MS 435/6) and within Cecil Harmsworth's correspondence and papers (see EUL MS 435/2). Emilie Harmsworth's name also appears regularly in Cecil Harmsworth's diaries (see EUL MS 435/1).
Admin HistoryEmilie Alberta Maffett was born on 13 December 1873 in St Helena, Finglas, County Dublin to Marcella Adelaide Maffett and William Hamilton Maffett. She married her cousin Cecil Bisshopp Harmsworth on 28 April 1897 in the parish church of Finglas, County Dublin. The two had three children: Daphne, Cecil Desmond, and Eric. During the First World War, she trained and worked as a nurse in London. She was styled as Baroness Harmsworth in 1938. Emilie Harmsworth died on 04 May 1942.
