TitleLetters from 1971 to 1976
DescriptionFolder containing letters from Ethel Mannin to Christopher Walker written between 1971 and 1972, with single items from 1975 and 1976. Topics covered include her opinions about Arafat, Marxism and revolution, her father's career in the postal service, Walker's travels through Armenia, Turkey and Russia and his plans to write a book on the region, Mannin's reminiscences about visiting Tiflis and elsewhere in Armenia in the 1930s and writing about it in 'South to Samarkand' (1937), a visit from Rev. Tony Crowe and her hope that CAABU will print one of his recent sermons as a pamphlet, other references to CAABU and Mick Ashley, a letter to Walker in Beirut and her chiding about him not having read her book 'A Lance for the Arabs' as well as surprise at him visiting Occupied Jerusalem, Joan Walker and the Nomad Society, her response to the assassination of Wasfi Tal and general pessimism about the possibility of violent Palestinian resistance achieving anything (which she compares to the IRA campaign), publication of her book 'Young in the Twenties', her old friends Izzat Tannous, Elmer Berger and Randa Fattal, her desire to hear Walker's impressions of Beirut, which she has not seen since 1962 and wants to write about for her next novel 'Mission to Beirut', Walker's move from Margaretta Terrace to a new house in Bolingbroke Road, her suspicions that King Hussein is connected to the CIA, outrage over a BBC roundtable discussion of Palestine and Israel, led by Ian MacIntyre, her attendance as guest-of-honour at a Foyle luncheon at which she sat between Arnold Toynbee and L.P. Hartley, her views of Musa Mazzawin - who has left CAABU - and news of an exhibition of paintings of Cairo by Peter Todd Mitchell, with whom Mannin has been corresponding.

The letter of March 1975 reveales that she sold Oak Cottage and moved to Shaldon, near Teignmouth in Devon, in September 1974.
