| Description | This series comprises texts on the subject of ethics which would have been available to nursing students in the United States of America who were educated and trained in hospital schools of nursing.
This material would have been held separately from the main hospital libraries.
Nursing training in hospitals effectively ended in the United States in 1965 when the American Nursing Association issued a position paper and policy that nursing must move into institutions of higher education (colleges and universities), with the bachelors degree as the point of entry into nursing practice. When nursing schools shifted to colleges and universities, the libraries were dispersed and not brought over into university libraries.
The approach to nursing ethics at this time was moral character based and rooted in education as well as clinical practice and experience. Nursing education during this period was seen as both professional and moral education, The goal was to create a morally good nurse and woman who affirmed the values, duties, ends and ideals of the profession. |
