TitleMartinique address by Charles Grant, collector of HM Customs
DescriptionThe document is an address from the British merchants in Martinique on the occasion of his departure from that island in 1814. This is the context of the Napoleonic Wars. Martinique island, in the Caribbean Sea, was under British occupation from 1809 to 1814 when the island was returned to French administration following the restoration of the French monarchy in 1814.
Admin HistoryCharles Grant was Collector of H M Customs, Martinique until 1814. It is possible that he was of the same family as Sir William Grant, whose father was Collector of Customs in the Isle of Man (see EUL MS 17).
