TitleUniversity of Exeter photograph archive
DescriptionThis collection contains a diverse range of photographs from throughout the history of the University of Exeter and its precedessor institutions, including photographs of St Luke's.

The collection contains photographs of staff and students from the early 20th c, and covers in great detail the mammoth building programme for the Streatham campus, especially in the 1950s and 1960s. Key events are also included, such as the presentation of the University Charter, visits by royalty and degree congregations. Student and academic life are represented, including Guild and Athletics Union activities. Coverage for some periods is patchy, perhaps in some cases due to the fact that the University Registry was bombed during the Second World War.

The photographic archive is arranged and catalogued to reflect the progression of the University from the city centre site at Gandy Street to the development of the Streatham Campus, the individuals who have shaped its history throughout this period and the various events or activities which collectively have created the University's particular identity.
Admin HistoryThis collection of photographs has been created by various departments of the University of Exeter and its predecessor institutions over time. Many of the photographs for the mid and late 20th century were taken by the University Library's Photographic Unit, which is first mentioned in the University of Exeter Calendar for the academic year 1969/1970, where the Senior Technician was W G Hoskin. He remained in post until 1976/1977. The post remained vacant during 1977/1978, with John Saunders (MIST) being appointed in his place from 1978-1979. He retired in c 1989-1990, at which point the Unit was closed and merged into the Department of Geography. John Saunders had previously been Senior Technician in the Geology department, where he undertook photographic work from at least 1969-1970, when his post is first mentioned in the University Calendar.

All of the photographs within the collection have been assembled from Jill Baines, Development Officer; Gina Cox, Fine Art Curator; donations to Special Collections archives (formerly MS 190, MS 197 and MS 198); and from the Modern Records Centre, Northcote House.

Related MaterialOther more modern photographs and negatives relating to the University are also held in Special Collections, University of Exeter Library, which have been transferred from Ann Pollard's office and were created and used by Communication and Partnership, Northcote House.

These photographs are more recent in date (1980s-2000s) and are not currently catalogued or available in the Reading Room. These are loosely arranged according to subject area and by academic department or school: these were created in the University Photographic Unit by John Saunders and Barry Phillips, and retained by Pollard following the closure of the Unit; the partial catalogue of this material was not retrievable at the time of the university photograph cataloguing project, summer 2005.

Other historic photographs continue to be deposited at the Library, and are not currently catalogued except for MS 353

Current photographs used within Communication and Partnership are preserved in a digital format, and are fully listed and indexed. Some of these, from 2000, are available on the university website. See:

http://www.ex.ac.uk/staff/archive/ Most of these online photographs have been taken by Jonathon Bosley.
ArrangementThe collection is split artificially into three broad areas as follows, as no original order was extant in the collection at the point of cataloguing:

1. Places
2. People
3. Events
