TitleUniversity photographs: Streatham campus: halls of residence A-F
DescriptionPhotographs and glass plate negatives of halls of residence on the Streatham campus, with names beginning A-F, comprising the following: Barton Place, Birks (Brendon, Haldon and Raddon), Duryard (Hetherington, Jessie Montgomery, Moberly and Murray) and Exeter Hall (Kilmorie) (arranged individually by file). A detailed description of each hall file is given below:

i) Barton Place:
Barton Place was acquired in 1948. Also negatives.

ii) Birks:
One file of interior, exterior and aerial photographs, including communal areas, [1960s]. Also glass plate negatives and oversize photographs, [1950s-1960s]. Contains photographs under the copyright of Dart & Bernard; Eric Keen; Skyviews & General. The original Birks Grange, acquired by the University College of the South West in 1946, was later demolished and replaced by Brendon, Haldon and Raddon halls, named after Devon hills, which opened in 1965-1966. These were themselves demolished in summer 2005.

iii) Duryard:
One file of interior, exterior and aerial photographs, including communal areas, during construction process and some architectural details of Duryard House [1960s-1980s]. Also glass plate negatives and oversize photographs [1960s]. Duryard House, a Queen Anne mansion, was bought in 1946 and restored some years later by Sir William Holford, the University's new architect. Hetherington and Murray Houses both opened in 1963 and were named after H J W Hetherington and John Murray, principals of the University College 1920-1924 and 1926-1951 respectively. Jessie Montgomery House, which opened in 1964 for women students, was named after the Secretary of the University Extension Committee, 1888-1918 and a crucial figure in the development of pre-University College education in Exeter. In 1966, Moberly House, named after W H Moberly, principal of the University College 1925-1926, opened nearby.
