Duncan established the periodical at the suggested of Ezra Pound and edited it with the help of his sister Bunny (Bianca Duncan)Early versions of 'Townsman' have a literary focus whereas later editions move towards farming and agriculture, reflected in the name change to 'The Scythe' which first appears in 1942. Contributors for each issue are listed in the description and include Bianca Duncan and Rose Marie Hansom [later Duncan], in addition to Olga Rudge, Ezra Pound, E.E. Cummings, Lawrence Durrell and many other noteable writers of the day.
