AdminHistorySir Richard Lodowick Edward Montagu Rees [1900-1970] was a diplomat, writer and painter. He was educated at Eton and Cambridge, and inherited his father's baronetcy in 1922. He worked as an attaché at the British Embassy in Berlin, before taking up a post as a lecturer at the Worker's Educational Association in 1925. Rees became editor of The Adelphi in 1930, where he met George Orwell. He drove ambulances in the Spanish Civil War and served in the Royal Navy and the French Nay during the Second World War. Rees edited 'Selected Criticism 1916-1957' and 'Poets, Critics, Mystics' with John Middleton Murry. He also published studies on Simone Weil, whose works he translated into English, as well as George Orwell and DH Lawrence. Rees was the literary executor for George Orwell and R H Tawney. He also painted, and exhibited his work at the Royal Academy.
