| AdminHistory | Arthur Wevell was born on 26 July 1889, the youngest child of William Wevell, a farmer, and Margaret (nee Varco) in Hazelmere, St. Winnow, Lostwithiel, Cornwall. There were five sons and two daughters in the family.

In 1914 Arthur married Beatrice Beckerleg, also from Lostwithiel, whom he had met at the age of eight. They had three children.During the First World War Teachers were a reserved occupation, but this stopped and on 01 March 1917, Arthur was called up into the 6th Somerset Light Infantry, Regimental No: 32542. He was initially offered the rank of Sergeant but declined and entered the war as a Private. Later he felt he had earned the rank of Sergeant and was promoted. He was in charge of preparations for gas attacks.
Arthur retired from teaching in 1949. Having started his teaching career on a salary of £387 12 shillings, he was earning £815 when he retired. |
