DescriptionThis collection comprises a range of material relating to the University of the College of the South West of England and the University of Exeter, which were collected by Professor John Caldwell and his wife, Christine Caldwell (nee Haynes). In particular, it includes papers and photographs relating to botany and agriculture in the gardens and grounds at the University College and the University of Exeter.

1. Materials relating to Cherry Trees gifted to the University College of the South West in 1936 by Japanese diplomats who, as language students, had studied English at the University College.
1.1.1 Photographs of saplings, still in their travelling crate from Japan. Three black and white photos [1 duplicated]; one shows Professor John Caldwell and Head Gardener, Mr. Cummings; one shows a plank with Japanese writing. [late 1930s]
1.1.2. Press cuttings, including the photographs listed in 1.1.1. One is dated 1936.
1.1.3. List of the seven categories of cherry trees on University College of the South West, dated 28 April 1939.

2. Materials relating to wartime food production on Streatham Campus during the Second World War

2.1.2 Article from the 'Illustrated Sporting and Dramatic News' entitled ‘Feeding 500’ concerning the agriculture and cultivation on campus in wartime. It includes a photograph of Mrs Christine Caldwell holding a young goat under her arm. Also includes an following article about the cultivation of the grounds of the evacuated Convent of Notre Dame, Clapham by the Clapham sub-division of the Metropolitan Police. [1940’s].

3. Photographs from Professor Caldwell’s collection
3.1.1 Ceremonial occasions including of laying the Foundation of the Hatherly Biological Laboratories by the Marquis of Salisbury on 23rd July 1948.
3.1.2 Aerial photograph of the Streatham Campus [c late 1950s]
3.1.3 Visits, including of three officials from Korea in 1957 and of another group to the [award-winning] chrysanthemums outside Reed Hall. Many of the visits were hosted or guided by Professor Caldwell. Most undated.

5.1.1 Article in the Devon Country Gardener (dated December 1998) by Terry Underhill concerning the Exeter University Streatham Campus, with corrections by Roderick Ross regarding the correct attribution of the horticultural excellence of the Streatham Estate and subsequent correspondence (1998-1999).

6.1. Diary and postcards
6.1.1. University College of the South West Diary for 1939 to 1940, annotated with the name, Christine N. Hayes [later Mrs Caldwell] at the front and a page of notes at the back; with a NUS membership card for 1939-1940 for Christine N Hayes inserted.
6.1.2 Five photographic views of views issued as postcards to assist the Appeal of the University College, Exeter Building and Endowment Appeal.

6.2.1. Devonshire Association Reprints by Professor Caldwell: one on the history of the University of Exeter (1962); and one on the work of a Department of Botany at the University (volume 100)

7.1.2. Annotated pamphlets, including 'The Ram Magazine' (Autumn Term 1939, signed by Christine N Hayes); and the programme for the University of Exeter's staff and student production of Gilbert and Sullivan's opera 'Princess Ida' at the Theatre Royal, produced by Christine Caldwell in March 1962. Inserts in this programme include a piece of green and white silk threads woven together; two black and white photographs of the production; a double-sided page review from the South Westerner; a theatre bill; and a note to all involved from the Musical Director Reginald Moore.
AdminHistoryJohn Caldwell was born 08 May 1903. He was the Head of Department of Botany at the University College (1935-1955) and the University of Exeter (1955-1969), the Director of the Hatherly Biological Laboratories from 1952 to 1969, the Dean of Science from 1938 to 1942 and from 1951 to 1954, and the Deputy Vice-Chancellor from 1957 to 1959. He died on 26 August 1974.
