The first one is marked 'North African cutings, July 88 to Dec 88' and contains cuttings from the UK press as well as the Daily Gulf Times and the Oman Daily Observer. Topics covered include the Polisario Front conflict with Morocco, the violent protests in Algeria's 'Black October', reforms and protests in Tunisia, and Libya's international relations. There are some typed sheets interspersed with the cuttings, and a few pages on the June 1988 Arab Summit Conference when Algeria, Morocco, Tunisia, Libya and Mauritania discussed political unity and strategies. Two folders cover 1989 and 1990 and include Bidwell's typed summaries of events, with some information drawn from the magazine 'Jeune Afrique'; topics include relations between the UK and Libya in the wake of the Lockerbie plane crash, ongoing disputes in the Western Sahara, international relations, Palestine, oppression and human rights abuses etc. There are two more folders for the years 1991 and 1992. |
