| Description | Folder containing documents relating to the PUK negotiations with Iraqi government in 1984, including letters from Iraqi foreign minister Tariq Aziz and Dr Fadil Al Barak, Director of Security, to Jalal Talabani (January 1984), eight photocopied photos showing Kurdish and Iraqi participants in the negotiations, including a picture of Jalal Talabani and Fuad Masum with senior Iraqi ministers Izzat al-Douri and Ali Hassan al-Majid during a visit from the Iraqi delegation to Kurdistan in 1983, a negotiation document from 1984 and a PUK briefing on the state of negotiations (10 November 1984), a paper on normalization in Kurdistan (1984), a booklet of observations on ending the negotiations with the Iraqi regime (1985) and copies of three letters to Jalal Talabani from the Iraqi Vice-President (1984-85). There are also four documents condemning the negotiations, one published by the Iraqi National Democratic Front (25 December 1983) which criticises the 'humiliating negotiations' [al-mufāwaḍāt al-muhīnat] between the two parties, describing it as a 'shameful and repulsive step' [al-khuṭwat al-sha'yinat wa-al-maqītat] and criticising specifically the strategy of linking their future to that of Saddam's regime, in breach of the Democratic Front's commitment to overthrowing the regime by armed struggle and establishing a new democratic Iraq. There is also a statement by the Syrian Ba'athist party condemning the negotiations between the PUK and what it terms the 'fascist authority' [al-sultat al-fāshiyat] in Baghdad (late December 1983) and another document published by the Socialist Party of Iraq in January 1984 which includes more details about how the talks were arranged, how news of them was leaked, with personal attacks on Jalal Talabani's conduct. |
