The son of Negley Farson, he was raised between Britain and America and as a teenager was made a lobby correspondent of the Central Press Agency, where he encountered MP Tom Driberg. From 1946 Farson spent two years in the American army, where he discovered an interest in photography, before attending the University of Cambridge. After leaving Cambridge, Farson made his home in Soho. He worked as a photographer, a steward in the merchant navy and, from 1956 onwards, a television interviewer.
