AdminHistoryWilliam Earnest Powys (1888-1978), born on 3 Mar 1888, was the tenth of eleven children, born to the Reverend Charles Francis Powys and his wife Mary Cowper Johnson at Montacute, Somerset. He attended Sherborne school, then bought a farm at Witcombe, Somerset in 1910. Early in 1914 he emigrated to British East Africa to manage a farm at Gilgil and then bought a farm at Kisima, north-west of Nairobi. He served in the war in Bowker's Horse unit and after it's disbandment he joined the East Africa Supply Corps driving cattle from the Belgian Congo to the troops in the East, for which he was awarded the Croix de Chevalier de l’Ordre de Leopold II. He was a successful farmer and in later years helped out his brothers financially. He died of a perforated ulcer on 9 October 1978.
