| Description | Folder of correspondence with Gulf Committee co-founder Ken Whittinghame. Most of the letters are from Whittinghame, written from the flat they shared in London, discussing Gulf Committee affairs, his visit to her mother's art exhibition, progress with the publication of her book on Saudi Arabia, events in the Middle East and north Africa, mutual frustration over missed correspondence and the time lag in receiving mail, his trip to Beirut (December 1977), the killing of Said Hammami, mutual acquaintances - Nigel Disney, Darshana, Pete Delius, Faris Glubb, Husayn Ali, John Gittings and others - as well his announcement in February 1978 that he was breaking off their relationship to marry someone else in April, the decision to shut down the Gulf Committee in 1978, and ending with the death of Nigel Disney in June 1978. Whittingham studied Arabic at SOAS and worked as a writer and translator for various publications, with a special interest in drama - he translated Egyptian writer Alfred Farag's play 'Marriage by Decree Nisi' (1992). |
