| Description | Large red photograph album recording a visit to Abu Dhabi on the occasion of the opening of a BP oil platform on the Island of Das, which is 100 miles offshore. The album contains fourteen pages, each of which has four 3½" x 4½" photographs pasted on. Prominent among them is the figure of Sheikh Shakhbut bin Sultan Al Nahyan, ruler of Abu Dhabi from 1928 until his deposition in 1966. He is shown greeting various officials and visitors, hosting a banquet, receiving gifts, examining a model of the oil platform, sitting next to Luce, talking with BP and oil industry representatives, looking through the lens of a camera in his hands, and drinking tea. There also scenes of hawking, views of Sheikh Shakhbut's Qasr al Hosn palace, cannons lying in the sand outside an archway, aerial views of Das and the oil platform, as well as photographs of speeches and other moments during the opening ceremony. This probably dates to the period 1960-62. |
