| Title | Letter from John Cowper Powys to James Abell |
| Creator Name | Powys; John Cowper (1872-1963); philosopher, lecturer, novelist, literary critic, and poet |
| Description | Manuscript letter with writing on six sides, which appears to be missing at least the first page, and the original posted envelope Powys talks about a debate [on A Glastonbury Romance] in which [Eleanor Farjeon] was 'very fierce on my side' and how John Lane of The Bodley Head used the 'most fantastical praise it got opposite the most violent abuse' as an advert for the book. Powys particularly mentions a favourable review by Edwin Muir. Powys mentions his hopes for publication and royalties of his 'Weymouth Book' [Weymouth Sands], also mentioning royalties from Glastonbury [Romance], Wolf [Solent] and [A Philosophy of] Solitude. Powys mentions that Edgar Lee, referred to as 'Old Masters' is staying at a farm in Hillsdale, and that Dreiser [presumably Theodore Dreiser] came to stay with the Fickes. Powys also gives his opinion on 'Anthony Adverse' (by Hervey Allen, 1933). The envelope is addressed to Abell c/o Thomas Cook & Sons at 5th Avenue, New York and stamped. |
