| Title | Obituary for John Cowper Powys |
| Creator Name | Powys; John Cowper (1872-1963); philosopher, lecturer, novelist, literary critic, and poet |
| Description | A cutting of a printed obituary for John Cowper Powys printed in the San Francisco Chronicle on page 22. The curring features a photograph of Powys from 1945. The text reads that he died at the age of 90 at his home in North Wales on Monday 17 June 1963. They mention his works 'Wolf Solent' and 'A Glastonbury Romance.' It is mentioned that Powys travelled extensively in the United States as a Lecturer, and that some of his works were not published outside of the United States. It states that in 193 Powys spent some time living in an abandoned farm in a "desolate" part of New York State, noting that the poet had intended to spend the rest of his life in absolute seclusion due to his theory that "pure laziness is the secret of hapiness." The cutting notes that Powys survived his two brother, as the three of them were a well known group during the inter-war period (1918-1939). His brothers are named as Llewelyn Powys an essayist, and T.F. Powys, a novelist. It notes that the brothers were descendants of the British poets William Cowper and John Donne on their mother's side. |
