<dc:title>Notebooks and files containing manuscript poem and play drafts covering multiple works</dc:title>
<dc:description>Causley often used notebooks to draft his poems from their earliest stages. These typically contain many embryonic poems in varying stages of completion, often with huge revisions taking place throughout a volume or subsequent volumes. Titles also often change; with first lines also changing in shape, this can make identification of the final published version difficult.

Causley's dramatic works are fewer in number and are therefore easier to identify, with character names generally remaining the same throughout various drafts.

Causley was often working on several works simultaneously, so often a single notebook or file will contain materials covering what later were published as 'multiple works'. As it is not therefore possible to classify these items obviously within EUL MS 50a/LIT/1 as one item would fall under two or three published titles, these volumes and files are retained within this part of the archive collection. EUL MS 50b/LIT/5 contains notebooks containing works that it has not so far been possible to identify.

This section has been loosely arranged as follows:

Poetry collections and anthologies (MS 50a/LIT/4/1-29)
Drama (MS 50a/LIT/4/30)
Mixed genres (MS 50a/LIT/4/31-37)
Assorted literary papers (MS 50a/LIT/4/38-41)

See EUL MS 50b/PROF/6 for details of short autobiographical prose pieces, thought to be written for radio broadcast.</dc:description>
