He was employed in the role after his wife Shan Toyne (Northcott Theatre Secretary at the time) suggested he be included in the photographers asked to audition for the roll. The audition took place at a photo call for the very first production 'The Merchant of Venice' (November 1967) after which each photographer was asked to submit photos and Toyne's were selected. Toyne continued photographing Northcott productions into the mid 1980's. In his early years as theatre photographer Toyne worked out of a photographic studio owned by Jerome Dessain, later he bought the company from Dessain. Toyne also produced catalogues and worked as a photographer for high-end estate agencies such as Knight Frank, the National Trust and local book publishers, in addition to undertaking wedding shoots and other freelance photography.
Nicholas Toyne passed away on 10th May 2024 in Topsham after suffering from dementia. </Nationality>
