TitleS Lister Petty papers, additional papers on Lancashire Flora and Fauna
DescriptionThis collection comprises a mix of printed journal articles, newscuttings and notes on botany and natural history in Cornwall, the north of England and Scotland, plus various ephemeral items on art, literature and curiosities, including a booklet on 'the Skiddaw Hermit' (1901). Also included are handwritten notes by Petty on flora of Lancashire and Cumberland, a page from Morden's map of Westmoreland, a small watercolour of the Guildhall in Exeter and several parts from 'The Constituents of the North Lancashire Flora, 1597(?)-1893'. Also one unidentified photograph. Some of the items post-date Petty's death and may have been collected by his daughter, Mabel.
Admin HistoryS. Lister Petty (fl 1878-1919), botanist, bibliophile, was living in 1889 in Chapeltown Road, Leeds, but soon after moved to Ulverston, first at Dykelands and later at 24 Queen Street. He wrote a series of tracts, 'The constituents of the North Lancashire flora: 1597-1893' (1894), published in eighteen parts by a local botanical society.
