Admin History | John Davys Beresford [1873-1947] was a novelist and essayist. After training as an architect, he began writing reviews for the Westminster Gazette in 1907 and publishing short stories. Beresford achieved critical acclaim in 1911 with the publication of his novels 'The Early History of Jacob Stahl' and 'The Hampdenshire Wonder', and went on to publish over 37 novels. He was acquainted with H G Wells, Walter de la Mare and D H Lawrence amongst others, and fathered four children, two of whom (Marc Brandel and Elisabeth Beresford) became professional writers themselves. he was also an early encourager of Henry Williamson when reading for Collins and arranged for publication of his first book 'The Beautiful Years'. Henry Williamson dedicated 'The Dream of Fair Women' from The Flax of Dream: "To my Friend, J. D. Beresford". |
