DescriptionContent Advice: This file includes items relating to enslavement, as well as offensive terms or terms that have changed meaning over time. In some cases these terms are included in our catalogue descriptions in order to provide information about the content and nature of the source.

1 Papers in folder marked '1778', containing documents detailing the numbers of livestock on the plantation, as well the numbers of enslaved men, women, boys and girls, including notes of births and deaths; and a document entitled 'A List of Negroes on York Estate the 1st of January 1778', comprising an alphabetical list of enslaved people (168 men, 163 women, 99 boys, 55 girls, and three 'Runaway' [self-liberated] men on the plantation, including details of each person's name, age, country of origin and 'occupation', as well as the enslaver's assessment of their 'condition' and 'value'.

2 Papers in folder marked '1779', containing documents detailing the numbers of livestock on the plantation, as well the numbers of enslaved men, women, boys and girls, including notes of births and deaths; one document comprising an incomplete [one page missing?] alphabetical list of enslaved people (156 men, 36 women, 104 boys, 62 girls, and three 'Absenters'), including details of each person's name, age, country of origin and 'occupation', as well as the enslaver's assessment of their 'condition' and 'value'.

3 Two copies of a document entitled 'A List of Negroes on York Plantation the property of William Gale Esquire specifying their Age, Country, Occupation, Condition and Value. Taken the 9th day of May 1782', comprising an alphabetical list of enslaved people (173 men, 143 women, 73 boys and 59 girls) on the plantation, including details of each person's name, age, country of descent, and 'occupation', as well as the enslaver's assessment of their 'condition' and 'value'. Includes duplicate list.

4 Document entitled 'Account Negroes and other slaves on York Plantation from the 28th December 1781 to the 9th May 1782'. It lists the numbers of enslaved men, women, boys and girls on the plantation, including notes of births and deaths.

5 Document entitled 'Account of Negroes on York Plantation from the 28th June 1781 to 28th September 1782'. It lists the numbers of enslaved men, women, boys and girls on the plantation, including notes of births and deaths.

6 Document entitled 'Account of Stock on York Plantation the 28th day of December 1782' and 'Account of Negroes on York Plantation the 28th day of December 1782'. 14 Bound papers beginning with the title '1 January 1829 List of Slaves & Stock on York Estate and Increase & Decrease 1828'. They include a list of 299 enslaved people on the plantation, noting details of the name (some with surname), age and 'occupation' of each person, as well as the enslaver's assessment of their health 'condition'; and lists of the numbers of enslaved men, women, boys and girls on the plantation, including notes of births and deaths, as well as the numbers of livestock.

15 Document beginning with the title 'Increase and Decrease of Slaves on York Estate from 1st January to 31st December 1829'. The document lists the numbers of enslaved men, women, boys and girls on the plantation, including notes of births and deaths, as well as the numbers of livestock.

16 Document beginning with the title 'List of Apprentices on York Estate 1st January 1837'. It includes a list of male and female apprentices [formerly enslaved people who, following the Slavery Abolition Act of 1833, had to continue working for their former enslavers under an imposed apprenticeship system without compensation for a set number of years], including details of each person's name, age, occupation and an assessment of their 'condition'; lists of the number of livestock on the estate; and an account of sugar and rum shipped and sold from the estate.
