DescriptionThe box contains: script labelled first draft; script labelled second draft; script labelled early draft (the earliest draft copy), heavily annotated by Peter Jewell; script in black binder, notable as the first script featuring the multiple roles of the lanternist; two drafts of 'Heroes'; loose undated draft; bound script with Bill Douglas' storyboard sketches in margins; script draft provided to Ismail Merchant; three 'blind' evaluations of the script from other screenwriters critiquing Douglas' first draft.
Admin HistoryBill Douglas began writing the script for 'Comrades' in the late 1970s while completing his film 'My Way Home'. In 1980 the script was completed and commissioned by Mamoun Hassan, then the head of the National Film Finance Committee. Hassan had previously funded Douglas' 'My Childhood' as head of the BFI Production Board. The script underwent several re-writes before production (almost) began with Ismail Merchant in 1984, but was largely unchanged between the switch from Merchant's to Simon Relph's tenure. Briefly under Merchant's advice was the title changed to 'Heroes', however soon after the film reverted to the title 'Comrades'.
