Admin History | Bill Douglas began writing the script for 'Comrades' in the late 1970s while completing his film 'My Way Home'. In 1980 the script was completed and commissioned by Mamoun Hassan, then the head of the National Film Finance Committee. Hassan had previously funded Douglas' 'My Childhood' as head of the BFI Production Board. The script underwent several re-writes before production (almost) began with Ismail Merchant in 1984, but was largely unchanged between the switch from Merchant's to Simon Relph's tenure. Briefly under Merchant's advice was the title changed to 'Heroes', however soon after the film reverted to the title 'Comrades'. |
