DescriptionMaterial includes: a photograph album of Bill Douglas's trip to the 1975 International Film Festival in Calcutta, those who have been identified in the photograph album include: Satyajit Ray, Mrinal Sen, Kanan Devi, Bhupen Hazarika, Sandhya Roy, Supriya Devi (Supriya Choudhury), Aparna Sen, Shyam Benegal, Subrata Mukherjee (Minister), and potentially Amol Palekar, Sunil Gangopadhyay, and Jyoti Basu; Invitation to meeting with Mr M. V. Krishnaswarmy, New Director of the International Film Festival Directorate, New Delhi. Correspondence from people he met during his visits to India in 1976/77, including Shekhar Kapur, Pradeep Dixit, Rakesh Matur, and othes enquiring about funding opportunities or references. There is a draft letter from Douglas to Shyam Benegal and his wife reflecting on his visit to India and mentioning meeting Dovshenko's widow; Letters from Manny Farber at the University of California, San Diego, about the possibility of Douglas teaching there and a letter to the director of the Chicago Film Festival from Bill expressing his desire to take the San Diego role, although this never came to pass. Letter from Nancy Sher at the AFI announcing her departure but with a handwritten note to Bill Douglas on the bottom; Details of fares to LA in 1980 from Anne Ainsley; Application form and Douglas notes for UK-US Bicentenniel Arts Fellowshios in 1976 (Peter Jewell suggest version of note used in 'Flying Horse'). Correspondence about offer to visit Canada for the Grierson film seminars in 1981- did not eventually happen. Letter from The British Council to Douglas complianing that a report has not been forthcoming from his sponsored visit to the USA in 1983 and response from Douglas complianing about his treatment by the Council whilst in America.
Admin HistoryDuring his life, Bill Douglas travelled extensively across the globe. He had a special fondness for India and this was reciprocated. His films continue to be popular in India, and Iran, today.
