DescriptionResearch papers for a biography of the Cornish concert pianist Moura Lympany (b 1916). Includes correspondence to Strickland, copy and original letters to Lympany, concert flyers and programmes, and copy photographs.
Admin HistoryMargot Strickland (1927-2008), biographer, collaborated with Lympany on the publication of Lympany's autobiography (1991).

Moura Lympany (1916-2005) was born in Cornwall and made her concert debut at the age of twelve, winning a scholarship to the Royal Academy of Music. In 1932 she made her Proms debut at the age of fifteen and played at the Wigmore Hall for the first time three years later. She was the first pianist to perform Khachaturian's piano concerto outside of Russia, and later performed it under his personal direction, and was also the first pianist to record the complete Rachmaninov Preludes during the lifetime of the composer. She recorded extensively and toured all over the world. In 1992 Moura Lympany was made a Dame Commander of the British Empire by Her Majesty The Queen in recognition of her services to music. In the same year Dame Moura was also honoured with the medal of Chevalier des Arts et Lettres by the French Government and in 1995 was made a Fellow of the Royal College of Music in London.
