TitlePapers relating to Iraq's relations with the UK: Farzad Bazoft and Daphne Parish
DescriptionFolder of presscuttings, telex reports and other papers relating to the cases of Observer journalist Farzad Bazoft and nurse Daphne Parish, who were convicted of spying in Iraq in November 1989; Bazoft was hanged in March 1990 and Parish was sentenced to 15 years' imprisonment, although returned to the UK in July 1990. There are a large number of presscuttings covering almost all aspects of the cases, including the possible implications of the business feud between Mohamed Fayed (Harrods) and Tiny Rowland (Lonrho, owners of The Observer) and an extensive selection of newspaper cuttings on Barzoft's execution and the British government's response. In addition to newspaper coverage of the arrest, trial and conviction of the pair, there is a press release from Amnesty International, a cutting from the Arab Times criticising western 'vilification' of Iraq, digest bulletins compiled by the BBC Summary of World Broadcasts reporting on Iraqi protests outside the British embassy in Baghdad and official statements on the case by the Iraqi foreign minister, a copy of Crusoe's 'In Brief' report on the case for MEED, reports on the part played by President Kaunda of Zambia, Baghdad Observer articles on the case - drawing on comments made in Britain by MPs Rupert Allason and other media sources - as well as a reproduction of Bazoft's signed 'confession.'
