TitlePapers relating to National Assembly Elections and Resolutions
DescriptionFolder of presscuttings, telex reports and other papers relating to the Iraqi National Assembly, its elections and resolutions. These include various cuttings and reports about the Iraqi monarchy following Saddam Hussein's restoration of a statue of King Faisal, with articles on the history of the monarchy and a profile of long-serving prime minister Nuri Al-Said (1888-1958). Most of the other papers relate to the workings of government, including reports of government policy on civil servants taking on private work, photocopies from MEED Annual Review (31 December 1977) with a full list of the Iraqi cabinet following its recent reshuffle, a page from Pesh Merga No.18 (March 1989) on 'Iraq. The Post-War Challenge', extracts from Baghdad Observer issues from 1980 announcing constitutional changes in relation to election procedure, the first general elections to the National Assembly since 1968 and the announcement of election results on 22 June 1980. There is also coverage of the October 1984 and April 1989 elections, and several cuttings from the Baghdad Observer in 1979 and 1980 giving the full text of the National Assembly and Legislative Law code. Other newspapers such as the International Herald Tribune, The Listener and the Telegraph carry articles (1980-81) on Saddam Hussein and the extent of democracy in Iraq.
