TitleDesk diaries of Sir William Luce, 1953-56, 1961-66, 1970-71
DescriptionSet of twelve hardback desk diaries, with many blank pages and occasional sparse details of appointments or meetings. The first four, 1953-1956, are bound in blue and cover his time (14 April 1953 to 1 January 1956) as Adviser on Constitutional and External Affairs to the Governor-General of Sudan. The final entry in the 1956 diary is 'Leave for Aden' on 16 August 1956 - he was sworn in as Governor and Commander-in-Chief the following day. The 1961 diary is in a soft brown cover and the first entry is on 16 May when he arrived in Bahrain as Political Resident in the Persian Gulf. This is the only diary to contain a degree of detail, with some days marked with up to four or five events or appointments. The diaries for 1962 to 1966 are all bound in red hard covers marked 'The Motherwell Bridge Contracting & Trading Co. Ltd' and are more sparse in their contents. The diaries for 1970 and 1971 are both official HMSO diaries, and cover Luce's time as Personal Representative to the Foreign Secretary (July 1970 - January 1972) with the first entry on the date of his appointment, 27 July 1970. Again, the contents are confined to brief details of appointments, travel dates and meetings, both personal and political.
