Admin History | Technical and Vocational Education Initiative (TVEI) was established by central government as part of the Manpower Services Commission in a pilot form in 1986 and extended in 1988 to all local authority funded schools as a national programme. TVEI aimed to provide all 14-18 students with the knowledge and skills required for success in adult life. The TVEI Resources Unit, was based in Mynachdy, Cardiff, Wales. The project closed in 1995 but was succeeded by the NVQ scheme.
Malcolm Deere (1935-2002) was born in Brentford, London, England, and educated at Hampton School, Hampton, Middlesex (he later donated the Deere Prize for Physics there). In the 1960s he was the director of a unit at Reading University looking at improving management courses. He subsequently became a lecturer at Loughborough University, and was later principal of Hackney Polytechnic. He is perhaps best known for his work as the director of UCAS (University and College Admissions Service) where he helped to create TVEI. Although he had no direct connection with Exeter, he was an associate of the late Ted Wragg, the noted educational advisor and Exeter University lecturer. He died in London in 2002. |
