DescriptionBundle of four folders containing Bidwell's research notes and presscuttings on Syria. The first one is a yellow folder consisting mainly of biographical profiles of political leaders, as well as some magazine cuttings such as an article by Scott MacLeod on 'How Assad Has Won' (New York Review, 1986), with signed note to Bidwell from the author, an article from the Independent magazine (1992) on Syrian pro-Assad propaganda, and other newspaper cuttings. There are then three slim brown files, marked Syria Pre-1914, Post-Mandate and Post-Independence, containing typed notes from books and periodicals, a photocopy of a document from the Foreign Office archives with biographical details of over 100 'Leading Personalities in Syria and the Lebanon' (ca. 1937), notes on Syrian political parties and the independence movement and notes from periodicals such as the Middle East Annual Review and Arab Regional Reports.
