Title | Material relating to the Crusade of Prayer, also known as the Rosary Crusade |
Description | This section consists of material relating to the Crusade of Prayer, including: membership registers, financial documents and some ephemeral items.
The Crusade of Prayer was an association known as The Rosary Crusade for the Souls in Purgatory (1893-1911) and The Association of the Crusade of Prayer for the Souls in Purgatory (1911-2005). The Crusade was established at Syon Abbey in Chudleigh in 1893 with the endorsement of the Bishop of Plymouth and Pope Leo VIII. It remained a significant activity for the community for the greater part of the 20th century and quickly gained a large membership. Members paid an annual subscription and undertook to pray a full fifteen decades of the rosary each week for the souls in purgatory. In exchange, members gained the papal indulgences granted to the Crusade, and weekly masses were said for members living and dead at the Lady Altar of the Shrine of the Rosary Crusade at Syon Abbey. In connection with the Crusade, the community also published a monthly magazine entitled 'The Poor Souls Friend and St. Joseph's Monitor'. |
