TitleHubert Britton papers relating to chemistry
DescriptionThe papers consist of some of Professor Britton's working papers, including his notes on various experiments, and papers relating to his setting and marking of examination questions.
Admin HistoryHubert Thomas Stanley Britton (1892-1960), Professor of Chemistry and Director of the Washington Singer Laboratories, University of Exeter, was the son of Thomas Ernest and Clara Britton, of Kingswood, Bristol. He was educated at St George's Grammar School, Bristol, the Merchant Venturers School, Bristol, Bristol University, King's College London, and Imperial College London. He worked as a chemist in the Air Ministry's Aeronautical Inspection Directorate 1916-1920, as a lecturer at King's College London 1920-1923 before undertaking a DSc degree at King's, which he received in 1926. From 1927-1928 he lectured at Norwood Technical College, and in 1928 came to Exeter as a lecturer in Chemistry, where he remained for the rest of his career. He obtained a second doctorate while at Exeter in 1934. He retired in 1957 and moved to Three Bridges, Sussex, where he died in 1960.
