DescriptionThis archive contains newspapers cuttings and newsfiles, political pamphlets; unpublished and draft papers; conference materials; university publications (Kurdish and Swedish), and maps. It also includes a large amount of original archival material relating to different Kurdish political parties, the Kurdish National Congress, the Kurdish Pen Club, etc., as well as personal correspondence. an extensive collection of primary source materials relating to Middle East politics, with a focus on Kurdistan and Iraq. The material has been listed by Omar Sheikhmous.

We also have here more than 150 different periodicals (magazines and newspapers) in Kurdish or on Kurdish subjects published in Kurdistan and in Europe throughout the 20th century. Admin HistoryOmar Ali Sheikhmous (1942-) was born Syrian (Kurdish) and became a citizen of Sweden in 1974. Educated in Syria until 1961, he studied International Affairs at the University of London (1964-1967). He continued his studies at the University of Stockholm with an MA in International Relations and Ph. D studies in Political Science (1972-1978).
In 1978 he stopped his PhD work for political reasons, joining the leadership of the resistance movement of the 'Patriotic Union of Kurdistan - PUK' in Iraqi Kurdistan against the regime of Saddam Hussein. He was a founding member of its leadership and in charge of its 'Foreign Relations' Committee 1975-1986.
He has worked as a lecturer, researcher and research project leader at the University of Stockholm firstly in the Department of Political Science and then the Center for Research in International Migration and Ethnic Relations (CEIFO). He worked as Senior Editor (2001-2005), then Service Chief (2005-2007) of the Kurdish Service of VOA (Voice of America). He has published extensively.
Among his many activities he is a translator of Kurdish (Kurmanji and Sorani) and Arabic in Swedish. Over the last twenty years he has organised numerous seminars, scientific conferences and lecture series on The Kurds, Immigration, Integration Refugee problems, Islam, Middle-Eastern politics and Society, Human Rights and Democracy, within Sweden, other European countries, the Middle East and the United States.
