DescriptionFolder of correspondence between Omar Sheikhmous and other PUK members and organisations such as the Red Cross, Save the Children, Amnesty International and the United Nations, as well as political leaders in Iraq, Sweden and the USA, asking for humanitarian aid, highlighting the plight of political prisoners, children and refugees, and seeking international recognition of the genocidal threat towards the Kurdish people. This folder also contains copies of letters sent to, and received from Sir Russell Johnston for the Social and Liberal Democrats and Sir Geoffrey Howe (British Foreign Secretary) responding to a PUK press release, and related correspondence with Claiborne Pell, Chair of US Senate Committee of Foreign Relations together with the preamble to of the 'Prevention of Genocide Act' (1988) and Pell's statement in support of the Act with reference to Iraqi Kurdistan. (See also EUL MS 403/2/1), a letter from the Mohtadi family concerning a political refugee from Iranian Kurdistan, Amir Arselan Ilkhanizade (1987), an email from Saren Azer to Sheikhmous (July 2007) describing her 'humanitarian mission' to Kurdistan that included providing medical care to victims of the Halabja attack and some correspondence from Grete Bille of the Danish Committee of the Human Rights of the Kurds regarding her research project on Ethnic Conflict.
