DescriptionNotebook diary of 'Capt. G.H.P. White'., covering his voyages and explorations around the Mediterranean in the period between 10 August 1830 and August 1834. Inside the front cover is written 'No.4' although this is the third in the set of six diaries held in our collection. The diary follows on directly from the end of the previous notebook (EUL MS 418/2) with description of antiquities in Syracuse and the Benedictine monastery at Catania, Sicily, from whence he sailed to Malta on 18 August, followed by Zante on 12 August. Subsequent events described in the diary include sailings to Nauplia (22 August, 26 October 1830), Smyrna - where he describes his experience of a Turkish bath (17 September 1830) - the Pass of Pantaleone, Corfu (December 1830), return voyage to England (1831) - followed by several blank and removed pages - sailing from Sheerness to The Downs (22 February 1834), an unscheduled visit to Torbay due to winds (28 February 1834), Cape Spartel on Morocco (25 March) - where he describes the practice of 'sweeping' (rowing) when becalmed - journeys between Gibraltar, Malta and Malaga (April and May 1834), a skirmish with a Spanish 'Costa Guarda' or privateer (28 May 1834), a visit to Barcelona with descriptions of the architecture, cafes etc (June 1834), and visits to Tangier and Tetuan in Morocco (July and August 1834), and an expedition with eight gentlemen and three ladies to Granada (24 September).
